Children's Future Fund

The Children’s Future Fund will:

  • enable the Institute to continue to attract and retain the finest researchers
  • nurture talented young scientists as they build a track record to qualify for competitive grants or fellowships
  • support the establishment of new research teams to tackle emerging issues and diseases
  • provide cutting edge technology and enhance the Institute’s state-of-the-art scientific research facility
  • generate seed funding for the scoping of innovative research before external grants are accessible
  • ensure the continuity of long term research projects by providing temporary bridging funds
  • leverage additional grants, often up to five times in dollar value
  • facilitate future growth with funding for capital works
  • operate at the highest ethical standards in everything it does.

About the Children's Future Fund

The Children’s Future Fund is an endowment fund to support research at the internationally renowned Telethon Institute for Child Health Research.

Like any business, the Institute must ensure that it can strategically plan for future opportunities, maintain and elevate its position in a very competitive industry and ensure at all times that our scientists are in a position to achieve research excellence. This requires a substantial capital base from which a sustainable income can be generated to underpin growth and respond rapidly to opportunities.

In international scientific review of the Institute in November 2006 was undertaken by an external panel of medical researchers from Australia and overseas. The report from the panel is glowing in its assessment of our research output and research programs.

However to further develop and fulfil its potential, the review panel recommended the Institute grows its endowment fund to around $100 million. This is not unrealistic when we compare the Institute with similar not-for-profit research institutes around the world. It will, however, be an enormous task to raise such funds.

Therefore, the Institute will approach this challenge in stages. Our first stage is to grow the endowment fund to $50million by raising a minimum of $30 million in the next three years.

To achieve this goal of $30million we will need substantial support such as the following:
