Adjunct Associate Professor Paul Watt BSc (Hons) D.Phil

Paul Watt completed his doctorate in Molecular Biology at Oxford before taking up postdoctoral appointments in yeast molecular genetics at Harvard and Oxford.  As an Honorary Research fellow at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, he was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor at the school of Paediatrics and Child Health of the University for Western Australia.  He is an inventor on more than 15 patent applications, and is currently the Scientific Director and VP, Drug Discovery of Phylogica Ltd (www.phylogica.com ), a spin-off drug discovery company which he founded to commercialise a new class of Peptide therapeutics known as Phylomers being developed by his laboratory at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research.  A/Prof Watt also established InfaMed Ltd., which is commercialising a drug delivery device which he developed for asthmatic children.  This company is a subsidiary of  the public company Clinical Cell Culture,  of which A/Prof Watt is a non-executive director.   This medical device for children which has received US regulatory clearance from the FDA and is CE marked, is currently marketed in Australia and overseas with annual sales exceeding US$1M. A.Adjunct Professor Watt was awarded the Curtin University Commendation prize for entrepreneurship at the 40-under-40 awards sponsored by WA Business News.

Unit Summary
The Drug Discovery Technology Unit is developing Phylomer peptides as anti-inflammatory agents.  The Unit has several national/international collaborations with biotechnology and large pharmaceutical companies interested in accessing this new class of peptides.   This work has stimulated considerable international interest and has been featured in Nature Biotechnology and the Australian media (for example on the ABC Catalyst) television program.
